In what way does your media product challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

One way in which we challenged forms and conventions of real media texts in our trailer would be our use of location, one film we were inspired by when creating our trailer was Narnia we used the idea of the characters being transported into an alternate world. In Narnia it is very clear when they are in Narnia and not in the real world as they look completely different and have unusual creatures in Narnia making it clear. However we wanted to challenge this idea of alternate worlds and that they have to be completely different, we wanted our alternate world to look similar to the real world we wanted there to be this idea that there are 2 different dimensions within the same world as such, to do this we filmed in similar locations for both the real and alternate world in our trailer. However to make sure that is was clear these two worlds were different and not the same we altered the music for the alternate world to be more upbeat and intense. We also altered the lighting in the alternate world to be more vibrant and we added a filter over all the footage which takes place in the alternate world.

Real text - Narnia:

Real world

vs

Alternate world

Our text - Siblings:

Real world

Script:

Another way in which we challenged real media conventions would be the way in which we portrayed the main character, we placed her in stereotypical clothing for a teenage girl and placed other stereotyped characters around her. Yet her character was not that of a stereotypical teenager lazing around moaning about everything. She was in fact the complete opposite as she was thrown into this alternate world she had to be a mature and fend for herself. A normal teenage girl having to fight for her life in a world she knows nothing about. We have tried to subvert the general stereotypes of teenagers these days. Not only did we subvert the stereotype of our main character but also of the main characters Nan, as old women are generally seen to be vulnerable and dependant however in out film her Nan is seen as wise and strong as she gives the main character the one piece of information that could save her life.
